Definitions & History of Cuts
A diamond’s shape is its outline (e.g. round, pear, heart); cut refers to the design and execution of facets on that shape. Early diamonds were “pointed” with flat tables; the 17th-century Mazarin cut introduced triangular crown facets, and later the Old Mine and Old European cuts refined brilliancy under candlelight. The industrial age (19th–20th C) saw the first faceting machines, yielding more precise rounds. In 1919 Belgian cutter Marcel Tolkowsky published Diamond Design, calculating optimal crown/pavilion angles and facet count (58 facets) for maximum sparkle. His model (modern Round Brilliant) remains the standard: “the round brilliant is the only diamond shape that receives a ‘cut grade’ from GIA,” with 58 exactly engineered facets.

Cut Quality Factors & Light Performance
A diamond’s cut quality depends on its proportions and finish. The key proportions are: Table % (table facet width), Depth % (height/girdle diameter), Crown angle/height, Pavilion angle/depth, Star & lower facet lengths, Girdle thickness, and Culet size. Finish factors are polish and symmetry. All of these affect how light behaves in the stone (its brilliance – white light return; fire – colored dispersion; and scintillation – sparkle contrasts). Below is a simplified summary:
- Table %: A large table (e.g. >60%) can emphasize brightness but reduce fire and scintillation, while a very small table (<50%) can boost fire but may look dark. GIA notes table size has “significant impact on face-up appearance”, especially in combination with crown/pavilion angles.
- Depth %: Overall depth that is too shallow (low depth %) causes light to “leak” out the bottom—making the diamond appear glassy or dull. Excessive depth traps light or directs it out the sides, leaving a dark pavilion or “fish-eye.” Ideally, a round should be ~59–62% depth (total) so light reflects properly.
- Crown Angle/Height: A taller crown (steeper angle) tends to increase fire (dispersion of colors), while a shallow crown boosts brightness. GIA notes crowns around 32–36° typically yield “attractive, bright, and fiery” appearance if table and pavilion are well-paired. Too steep (>36°) may sacrifice face-up brightness; too shallow (<32°) loses fire.
- Pavilion Angle/Depth: The pavilion’s angle is crucial: if too shallow, light leaks sideways; if too steep, light escapes out the bottom. GIA warns steep pavilions can produce a dark area under the table, reducing brilliance. An ideal pavilion angle for rounds is around 40.6–41°.
- Star & Lower Facet Lengths: Extreme facet sizes hurt performance. Very short star facets (tiny triangles) make the stone appear dull; very long facets can cause misallocated light. Similarly, uneven lower facets can disrupt sparkle. Balanced facets (e.g. star: ~50–60%, lower half: ~75–80% of diameter) are desirable.
- Girdle Thickness: Should be about medium/thin – thick girdles add weight (unseen) and can dull brilliance; extremely thin girdles risk chipping. GIA reports girdle as medium/thin to slightly thick on well-cut stones.
- Culet Size: Ideally none or very small (“pointed”), so no light leaks through a hole. A large culet produces a visible dark spot and “lowers cut grade”.
Performance (Brilliance, Fire, Scintillation): In well-cut diamonds, white light enters and bounces internally to return out the table and crown facets. Brightness (total light return), fire (spectral flashes) and scintillation (pattern of sparkle) are the result. AGS’s performance analysis measures “brightness, fire, and contrast” (dark/light pattern) from center to edge. For example, a shallower round (large table, low depth) may show high surface brightness but low fire, whereas a deeper-cut round may seem flashy (many small flashes) but have a dark center. The balance of facet angles determines the look. In practice, top cut grades (GIA Excellent or AGS Ideal) correspond to proportions near the ranges Tolkowsky and others found optimal; dropping below that can yield noticeable changes in brilliance.
Polish & Symmetry: These finishing qualities, graded Excellent to Poor (GIA) or 0–10 (AGS), also factor in. High polish ensures facet surfaces are smooth mirrors; poor polish can dull sparkle. Symmetry misalignments (e.g. off-center table, uneven facets) disrupt light paths. As GIA notes, cut grade evaluation includes polish and symmetry as components. In practice, truly top cut grades require very good symmetry/polish, but many Very Good–Good stones still perform well.

Grade Mapping: There is no universal “map” between labs, but in general an Excellent (GIA) ≈ 0 Ideal (AGS); a Very Good (GIA) ≈ 1 or 2 (AGS), etc. IGI/EGL grades often correspond to lower GIA grades (e.g. an IGI “Excellent” round might be a GIA “VG” or lower). As one industry source notes, “Diamonds with EGL International reports often trade at deep discounts, while those with EGL-USA do about as well as IGI”.
Cut Grade & Price Impact
Cut grade heavily influences price. Retailers report that an Excellent cut stone typically costs much more than a Very Good of the same size/color/clarity, despite minimal visual difference. For example, Blue Nile’s current listings (July 2026) show: a GIA 1.00 ct D‑VS1 round with Excellent cut at ~$5,281, whereas the same specs with Very Good cut is ~$3,970. That’s roughly a 25% premium for top cut quality.
Prices also exponentially rise with carat weight. (See Fig. 11.) For instance, a 2.00 ct ideal cut might be 3–4× the price of a 1.00 ct of equal grade. Washington Diamond data (Apr 2026) gives average retail prices: ~$1,062 for 0.50 ct, ~$3,708 for 1.00 ct, ~$17,464 for 2.00 ct. This non-linear jump reflects rarity of larger stones. Buyers should compare price-per-carat (PPC) and watch for markups.

In summary: demanding an Excellent/Ideal cut nearly always costs more per carat. If budget is fixed, one can save by choosing Very Good or Good cuts while keeping color/clarity high. But be cautious: very poor cuts (Fair/Poor) can look lifeless and are often avoided by reputable sellers. As Ritani notes, the sparkle difference between Excellent vs Very Good may be subtle, but the price gap is “more significant”. Always compare by price-per-carat when carat sizes differ.
Buying Guide (U.S. Consumers)
Certification: Always insist on a respected lab report. GIA and AGS are gold standards. Verify certificates online (GIA/AGS have report checkers). Be aware that terms like “Ideal” or “Signature Ideal” are marketing terms unless backed by a recognized lab. The U.S. FTC Jewelry Guides (not cited here) require full disclosure – e.g. clearly label lab-grown diamonds as such. Keep the certificate: it documents the 4Cs and proves authenticity. Note that the certificate shows technical characteristics not insurance value. For insurance, get a separate written appraisal by an independent, qualified appraiser. FTC guidelines forbid overvaluing appraisals – ensure the stated value reflects fair retail replacement cost.
Pricing Tactics: Research prices on multiple platforms (e.g. Blue Nile, James Allen, local stores). Online retailers often list a “diamond price” and discounted monthly payments. Try to get quotes for identical specs from several vendors. If buying in-store, be prepared to negotiate on setting/labor; diamond stone prices are usually fixed. Beware upselling “ideal-cut upgrades” too aggressively. If the vendor offers an upgrade program or trade-in (e.g. Blue Nile’s “Lifetime Diamond Upgrade”), read terms – trade-in credits typically exclude setting and are often well below original price.
Return/Warranty: Check return policies carefully. Many U.S. retailers (e.g. Blue Nile) offer ~30-day free returns. In-store policies vary, and there is no federal cooling-off period for jewelry. Make sure you know the deadline and condition requirements for returns (usually unworn, with certificate and tags). Ask about warranties: some stores include free lifetime warranty (e.g. for defects or regluing stones), others sell extended plans. Understand who handles repairs and at what cost.
Insurance: Insure your diamond promptly. Regular homeowners policies often limit jewelry cover (~$1,000 cap) unless scheduled. Specialized insurers (e.g. Jewelers Mutual) can insure 100% of appraised value against loss, theft, damage, disappearance, even worldwide travel. They typically require an appraisal. Jewelers Mutual (leading U.S. insurer) covers “all perils” and insures items for their full documented value. Natural vs Lab-Grown: Lab-grown diamonds are chemically identical to natural, but much cheaper (often 50–80% less). U.S. law (FTC) requires clear disclosure of a diamond’s origin. If buying lab-grown, ensure the report specifies “laboratory-grown.” Lab-grown often come with IGI or GIA lab-grown reports. The resale market for lab-grown is still evolving; factor that if future resale is a concern.
Retailers, Negotiation & Scams
Where to Shop: Brick-and-mortar jewelry stores (mall jewelers, luxury boutiques) allow hands-on viewing and personal service, but overhead is higher. Online retailers (Blue Nile, James Allen, etc.) offer wider selection and usually lower prices, plus high-res videos/ASET scope images for many stones. Some consumers combine: pick a stone online then have it set locally, or buy loose online and use an independent jeweler for customization. For high-end stones, consider going to GIA/AGS member jewelers for advice.
Negotiation: In-store, prices are often marked up to allow negotiation. Polite, informed buyers may get discounts on metal or setting fees. (However, many chain stores have limited wiggle). Always compare final costs (stone+setting+tax) across vendors. In any negotiation, avoid any pressure tactics or last-minute “this deal expires today” claims. Get any promised deals in writing (e.g. price-match, free stone upgrades).
Common Scams: Be wary of unsolicited offers (e.g. random calls/emails for “free diamonds” or “secret inventory”). Never wire money or pay by gift cards – credit card is safest and often insurable. Check that any loose diamond’s serial number (etched on girdle for many GIA diamonds) matches the certificate. Beware deliberately misleading certificates – e.g. some disreputable sellers substitute a smaller diamond that vaguely matches a lost report (“bait-and-switch”). Avoid buying from unknown websites without reviews. Lastly, any deal far below typical prices is a red flag – it may be a synthetics or misgraded stone.
Maintenance & Care
Diamonds are extremely hard, but they can get oily or scratched (by other diamonds). Clean your diamond regularly (e.g. daily wear: soak in mild detergent solution and gently brush or ultrasonic cleaner, if safe for any setting stones). Inspect prongs annually – a knocked prong is a common cause of losing a stone. Have your jeweler tighten loose prongs and repolish as needed. Tip: Professional cleanings can restore shine. Remove diamonds when doing heavy work or harsh chemicals to avoid damage to setting. Store diamonds separately (e.g. in soft pouches) to prevent them scratching other jewelry (and vice versa).

- Is cut more important than color/clarity? Most gemologists say yes: an Excellent cut (top sparkle) will make a diamond look more lively even if its color is H–I or clarity VS, whereas a Poor cut looks dull even if it’s D-F color. Balance your C’s by budget; for many buyers, cut is prioritized, then color, then clarity.
- Why does GIA grade only round cut? Because round is the most common and its facets are precisely defined.
