GIA Finally Brings Cut Grades to Fancy Shapes

Twenty-One Years in the Making and Rewrites the Fluorescence Conversation

Two announcements, one theme

The Gemological Institute of America has disclosed two changes to its diamond grading reports, and while they may look like separate items on a technical roadmap, they share a single underlying logic: the GIA is moving to close gaps between what its reports say and what buyers actually experience when they look at a diamond.
Announcement one: GIA plans to introduce cut grades for marquise-, oval- and pear-shaped diamonds in 2027. Additional details on the launch and related laboratory services will come in early 2027. This is a development the trade has been requesting for years.
Announcement two: Beginning in the fourth quarter of this year, GIA will add new comments about fluorescence to its standard diamond grading and dossier reports. Around 10% of natural, D-to-Z diamonds GIA receives may be eligible for such a comment — one of two possible notes, with the more cautionary version applying to less than 0.2% of stones.
Both changes touch subjects the industry has argued about for decades. Let's take them one at a time, properly.

PART ONE: CUT GRADES FOR FANCY SHAPES

The gap being closed

Here is the situation as it has stood, and it is genuinely striking once stated plainly.
A round brilliant diamond can earn a triple-Ex grade — Excellent cut, Excellent polish, Excellent symmetry. Three assessments, and the first of them, cut, is the one that speaks directly to how the stone performs optically: how it handles light, how bright it looks, how much fire and scintillation it delivers.
Every other shape — marquise, oval, pear, cushion, emerald, radiant, princess, heart, and the rest — receives grades only for polish and symmetry.
Read that again, because the implication is important. Polish measures surface finish quality. Symmetry measures the precision of facet alignment and outline regularity. Both are meaningful measures of manufacturing execution. Neither tells you whether the diamond is beautiful.
A fancy-shape diamond can be polished immaculately and aligned symmetrically, and still be a poor performer optically — dull in the center, with a pronounced bow-tie, or proportioned in a way that leaks light rather than returning it. Under the current system, that stone's report looks essentially identical to a genuinely spectacular one of the same shape, color, clarity, and weight.
The trade's complaint, which it has been making for several years, is exactly this: cut quality varies enormously among fancy shapes, and GIA reports currently do not recognize that variation.

Why 2006 matters — and why 2027 is a twenty-one-year project

GIA's statement contains a detail that reframes this from "new initiative" to "long campaign":
"GIA has been working toward developing cut-grade standards for fancy-shape diamonds since the introduction of the GIA round brilliant cut-grading system in 2006."
Since 2006. Which means the fancy-shape cut grade has been in development for roughly two decades.
That is not institutional sluggishness. It is a measure of how genuinely difficult the problem is — and understanding why illuminates the whole story.

Why round was solvable

The round brilliant is a uniquely tractable subject for standardized cut grading, for reasons that are structural rather than accidental:
It is rotationally symmetric. A round brilliant looks essentially the same from every direction around its axis. Analyze one cross-section and you have effectively analyzed all of them.
Its facet architecture is standardized. The 57- or 58-facet brilliant arrangement is a near-universal convention. Deviations exist but the baseline is shared.
Its proportions reduce to a manageable parameter set. Table percentage, crown angle, pavilion angle, girdle thickness, depth percentage, culet — a finite set of measurable variables with well-understood optical consequences.
Its outline has one degree of freedom: none. A round is round. There is no length-to-width decision to make.
That combination is what made a rigorous, defensible, reproducible grading system possible. GIA could model light behavior across the parameter space, correlate it with observed appearance, and draw grade boundaries that meant something.

Why fancy shapes resisted for twenty years

Now consider the marquise, oval, and pear against every one of those conditions.
They are not rotationally symmetric. An oval has a long axis and a short axis. Light behaves differently along each. A single cross-sectional analysis captures almost nothing.
Outline proportion is a free variable — and a large one. A "1.30 ratio oval" and a "1.55 ratio oval" are both legitimately ovals, and they look substantially different. Buyer preference across that range is real and divergent. Which raises the hard question: is a longer oval worse-cut, or just differently proportioned? A grading system has to answer that, and any answer risks penalizing legitimate aesthetic variety.
Facet arrangements are not standardized. Fancy-shape faceting varies considerably between cutters and design philosophies. There is no single canonical marquise the way there is a canonical round brilliant.
They have shape-specific optical signatures. The bow-tie — a dark band across the center of elongated shapes — is the classic example. It arises from the geometry of elongated brilliants and appears in nearly all of them to some degree. Sometimes it is barely perceptible; sometimes it dominates the stone. Quantifying it objectively is genuinely hard, because its visibility depends on lighting, viewing angle, and observer sensitivity.
Points and terminations introduce their own problems. Marquise and pear shapes have points. Points affect light behavior locally, create durability considerations, and can be executed well or badly in ways that resist simple measurement.
Any grading system for these shapes must therefore accomplish something conceptually delicate: distinguish poor execution from legitimate design variation. That is a far subtler task than grading a round, and it is why twenty years of research was required rather than two.

Why these three shapes first

GIA is starting with marquise, oval, and pear — and that selection is analytically coherent rather than arbitrary.
All three are elongated modified brilliants. They share:

an elongated outline with a length-to-width ratio as a key variable

brilliant-style faceting rather than step-cut faceting

susceptibility to the bow-tie effect

broadly similar optical mechanics
This means the research, modeling, and grading logic developed for one transfers substantially to the others. It is the most efficient possible starting cluster — three shapes that can be addressed with one coherent framework.
It also implies something about the sequence to come. Step cuts like the emerald and Asscher work on entirely different optical principles: broad flat facets producing the hall-of-mirrors effect rather than the sparkle scintillation of brilliants. Grading those requires a different analytical model. Similarly, squared brilliants like the cushion, princess, and radiant have their own geometry, and the heart has its own distinctive challenges.
Starting with the elongated brilliant family is the sensible first move in a longer program.

The demand context — why now

The timing is not coincidental. Fancy-shape demand has grown substantially, and GIA has the data to prove it.
Tom Moses, GIA's executive vice president and chief laboratory and research officer, noted in a 2025 interview that almost a third of diamonds GIA received for grading in 2022 were fancy-shaped — up from less than a quarter across the previous ten years.
That is a meaningful shift. Consider what it implies:
Roughly one in three graded diamonds now belongs to the category with no cut grade. The gap in GIA's reporting has therefore been growing in significance every year. When fancies were a modest minority, the absence of a cut grade was a limited problem. At a third of volume, it is a structural gap in the information the market runs on.
A grading system's authority depends on its coverage. GIA's standing rests on being the reference point for diamond quality assessment. Leaving a third of graded stones without the single most consumer-relevant quality measure is a coverage problem that grows harder to justify as the share rises.
Consumer preference has genuinely moved. The rise of ovals in engagement rings, the resurgence of marquise and pear shapes, the broader appetite for distinctive rather than conventional — these are real shifts in taste, driven by design trends, social media visibility, and buyers wanting something recognizably their own. Fancy shapes also often present larger face-up for a given weight, which carries obvious appeal.
Moses first revealed the plans publicly in September at the Jewellery & Gem World Hong Kong show, without specifying which shapes would come first. That detail — the shape selection — is what Friday's statement resolves.

What this changes for the market

For consumers

This is where the impact is largest, and GIA frames it in exactly those terms: the effort is "aligned with GIA's mission of consumer protection."
That phrase is worth taking seriously rather than reading as boilerplate. Consider a buyer shopping for an oval today. They can compare carat, color, and clarity across candidate stones with confidence, because those are graded and standardized. On the question that most determines whether the diamond will actually look beautiful — the cut — they have polish and symmetry grades that don't answer it, and beyond that, their own untrained eye and whatever the seller tells them.
That is an information asymmetry, and it runs in one direction. The seller knows which of their ovals perform well. The buyer, in most cases, does not.
A cut grade closes that asymmetry. It gives a buyer with no gemological training a standardized, independent, comparable measure of optical quality. That is precisely the function GIA's round brilliant cut grade has performed since 2006, and extending it to a third of the market is a substantial expansion of consumer protection in the literal sense.

For manufacturers

GIA notes the initiative will be supported by "manufacturer-focused solutions" alongside education and laboratory services — and that phrasing signals real change in production.
Once a fancy-shape cut grade exists, it becomes a planning target. Cutters currently optimize fancy shapes for weight retention, outline appeal, and their own judgment of beauty. Introduce a graded, market-recognized cut assessment and a fourth consideration enters: what grade will this plan achieve?
This will reshape decision-making in predictable ways:

Plans that sacrifice optical performance for weight retention become harder to justify if the resulting grade discount exceeds the weight premium.

Proportion choices that previously rested on individual judgment will be measured against published criteria.

The economics of pushing for a top grade versus accepting a lower one will need to be modeled, exactly as they are for rounds today.
The round brilliant market offers the template. After 2006, the pursuit of Excellent cut grades became a central organizing principle of round brilliant manufacturing, and the average quality of cut in the market rose measurably as a result. There is good reason to expect a similar effect in fancy shapes: grading a quality attribute tends to improve it, because it creates a market reward for doing it well.

For pricing and market structure

This is the consequence with the widest reach, and it will unfold over years rather than months.
Right now, fancy-shape pricing incorporates cut quality informally. Experienced buyers pay more for well-cut ovals because they can see the difference. But that premium is negotiated case by case, dependent on the buyer's expertise, and invisible to anyone without trained eyes.
A cut grade formalizes that premium. Once "Excellent cut oval" is a defined, verifiable category, it becomes a tradeable specification. Price differentials that were previously tacit become explicit and quotable.
The likely effects:
Price stratification. Fancy-shape prices should spread out by cut grade, much as round brilliant prices do. Well-cut stones command documented premiums; poorly cut stones face documented discounts.
Improved liquidity for high grades. A stone whose quality is certified is easier to sell, remotely, to buyers who cannot inspect it. That reduces friction and widens the buyer pool.
Pressure on the bottom of the market. Stones that would previously have sold on the strength of carat, color, and clarity alone will now carry a cut grade that may disclose their weakness. Some inventory currently moving comfortably will become harder to place.
A transition period with real dislocation. Existing inventory graded under the old regime will coexist with newly graded stones. Businesses holding fancy-shape inventory should be thinking now about how their stock will look once a cut grade is attached to it — because some of it will look better and some of it will look worse, and both outcomes have balance-sheet consequences.

PART TWO: THE FLUORESCENCE COMMENTS

The change

Separately, and sooner, GIA will add new fluorescence commentary to its standard diamond grading and dossier reports, beginning in the fourth quarter of this year.
Natural diamonds with D to Z color and fluorescence within a certain range will receive one of two notes:
Comment A — the positive note. That the fluorescence may enhance the diamond's appearance in environments rich in ultraviolet light, such as natural daylight.
Comment B — the cautionary note. Applying to less than 0.2% of natural D-to-Z diamonds, stating that fluorescence "can make existing characteristics unrelated to fluorescence, such as reduced transparency, haziness, or milkiness, more noticeable under UV-rich lighting."
These would appear in the comments section of relevant reports. GIA is primarily evaluating these two options and cautions that wording is not finalized.
Eligibility is narrower than it might appear. Around 10% of natural D-to-Z diamonds GIA receives may qualify, and only stones with fluorescence within certain intensity ranges and within specific color, clarity, and polish ranges will be eligible.

Why this is a bigger deal than it looks

To understand the significance, you need the history — and the history is one of the more remarkable examples of persistent market mispricing in the diamond trade.

The fluorescence discount

Fluorescence is the property whereby a diamond glows, most commonly blue, under ultraviolet light. It occurs naturally in a substantial share of diamonds. It is not a treatment, not damage, and not an artifact of processing. It is a characteristic of the stone's atomic structure.
For decades, the trade has applied a discount to fluorescent stones — steeper as intensity rises. Strong-fluorescence diamonds routinely trade well below equivalent non-fluorescent stones.
The stated basis is a perceived impact on desirability: a belief, widespread in the trade, that fluorescent diamonds may appear hazy, milky, or oily.

What GIA's research actually found

Here is where it gets interesting. GIA has studied this question extensively, and its findings do not support the magnitude of the discount.
In a 2021 paper, GIA argued that strong fluorescence does not itself cause haziness in diamonds — though it can exacerbate the effect where haziness is already present for other reasons.
That distinction is critical, and it is the intellectual foundation of the entire new comment structure. Fluorescence is not the cause of haziness. Haziness has other causes — reduced transparency arising from a stone's internal characteristics. What fluorescence can do is make an existing condition more visible under UV-rich light.
Notice how exactly the proposed Comment B tracks this finding. It refers to fluorescence making "existing characteristics unrelated to fluorescence" more noticeable. The wording is scientifically precise: the characteristics are pre-existing and unrelated to fluorescence; fluorescence affects their noticeability, not their existence.
And GIA's broader conclusion, stated directly:
"The research demonstrates that fluorescence generally has a neutral-to-positive effect on appearance and, in many cases, may cause a diamond to appear brighter in daylight-equivalent environments."
Neutral-to-positive. For a characteristic the market has discounted for decades.

The 0.2% number is the punchline

This is the single most consequential statistic in the entire announcement, and it deserves to be stated as starkly as possible.
The cautionary comment — the one flagging that fluorescence may make haziness more noticeable — will apply to less than 0.2% of natural, D-to-Z diamonds.
Fewer than two in a thousand.
Now set that against a trade practice that discounts fluorescent stones broadly and systematically. The market has been pricing in a risk that materializes, by GIA's assessment, in under a fifth of one percent of cases.
Meanwhile, of the roughly 10% of stones eligible for a comment at all, the overwhelming majority will receive the positive note — that fluorescence may enhance appearance in UV-rich environments like natural daylight.
Read the arithmetic plainly: GIA is preparing to tell the market, on its own reports, that fluorescence is far more often a benefit than a problem.

Why daylight is the right frame

The positive comment specifies enhancement in "environments rich in ultraviolet light, such as natural daylight."
That parenthetical does substantial work, because it relocates the entire discussion to conditions that actually matter.
Fluorescence is typically demonstrated under a UV lamp — an artificial, extreme condition designed to make the effect maximally visible. Under a UV lamp, a strongly fluorescent diamond glows dramatically. This is how most people in the trade first encounter fluorescence, and it is a spectacle that has probably done more to shape negative perception than any actual appearance issue.
But nobody wears a diamond under a UV lamp. People wear diamonds in daylight, in offices, in restaurants, in the evening. Natural daylight contains UV — enough to activate fluorescence, but at intensities nothing like a laboratory lamp.
By framing the comment around daylight, GIA anchors it to lived experience. And in that setting, the research says the effect trends toward making the diamond appear brighter.

The deliberate omission — no word on color grade

One of the most carefully considered aspects of the announcement is what the new comments will not say.
The comments will not address how fluorescence affects the color grade — a connection the industry has occasionally drawn.

The mechanism the comments avoid discussing

The underlying phenomenon is real and documented on GIA's own website: blue fluorescence can cause a lower-color diamond to appear more colorless under UV light, because blue visually offsets yellowish body color. Conversely, in high-color diamonds, some observers perceive a hazy or oily appearance in fluorescent stones.
This is where the trade's suspicion originates. If fluorescence can make a stone appear whiter, the worry goes, might it be influencing the color grade itself — inflating the assessment relative to a non-fluorescent equivalent?

Why GIA is staying out of it

The decision to remain silent on this point is almost certainly deliberate, and defensible on several grounds:
Grading conditions are controlled. Color grading is performed under standardized lighting specifically designed to produce consistent, comparable results. The methodology exists precisely to isolate body color from confounding effects. Adding report language about fluorescence's relationship to color grade would invite doubt about that methodology.
The two questions are genuinely separate. "Does this stone's fluorescence affect how it looks in daylight?" and "Does fluorescence influence assigned color grades?" are different inquiries. The new comments address the first. Conflating them would muddy both.
Report comments must be unambiguous. A grading report is a reference document read by people with widely varying expertise. Language nuanced enough to handle the color-grade question properly would likely be too complex for the format — and language simple enough for the format would likely be misleading.
Scope discipline serves the goal. The comments make one clear, research-backed claim about appearance in real-world lighting. That is a contained, defensible contribution. Extending into grading methodology would broaden the claim beyond what a comment line can support.
So the industry's color-grade question remains open. What has changed is that the appearance question — the one that actually drives the discount — now gets an answer printed on the report.

What the fluorescence comments could change

Potential correction of a long-standing discount

If GIA reports begin routinely stating that fluorescence may enhance appearance in daylight, and the cautionary alternative applies to under 0.2% of stones, then the factual basis for a broad fluorescence discount becomes considerably harder to defend.
Two forces should push toward correction:
Sellers gain an argument. A dealer holding fluorescent inventory can now point to a positive statement on an independent GIA report. That is a materially stronger position than asserting the point personally.
Buyers lose an excuse. A buyer demanding a steep fluorescence discount is now arguing against language on the report they are relying on for every other quality attribute. That is an uncomfortable position to hold consistently.
Realistically, this will be gradual. Market conventions of long standing do not dissolve because a report line changes. Discounts persist partly through habit, partly through the self-reinforcing logic that everyone else applies them. But the informational foundation is shifting, and prices generally follow information eventually.

A genuine value opportunity

The plainest implication for anyone buying diamonds right now: fluorescent stones are currently discounted for a reason GIA's own research does not support in most cases.
A stone that looks excellent, carries strong grades, and happens to fluoresce is available at a discount today. If report language and market understanding shift, that discount may narrow. Buyers who recognize this before the correction capture the difference.
This is not a certainty and should not be treated as one. But the asymmetry is real: the research says neutral-to-positive, the market says discount, and the gap between those two positions is where opportunity lives.

Sharper identification of the actual problem cases

The overlooked benefit of the two-comment structure is precision.
Under the current regime, a buyer sees "Strong Blue" fluorescence on a report and has no way to know whether this particular stone is one of the rare problematic cases or one of the overwhelming majority where fluorescence is neutral or beneficial. In the absence of information, prudent buyers discount everything.
The new system separates them explicitly. Comment A signals a stone where fluorescence is an asset. Comment B — rare, applying to fewer than two in a thousand — flags the genuine caution.
That is what good disclosure looks like: not a blanket warning, but accurate differentiation. It should reduce indiscriminate discounting while making the actual problem cases identifiable.

Restrained eligibility

Note how tightly GIA has drawn eligibility. Only about 10% of natural D-to-Z diamonds qualify at all, and only those falling within specific fluorescence intensity ranges and specific color, clarity, and polish ranges.
Those additional filters — clarity and polish in particular — make sense given the research. Whether fluorescence makes anything more noticeable depends on whether there is anything to notice. A stone with excellent transparency has no latent haziness for fluorescence to amplify. The eligibility criteria appear designed to apply comments only where they carry actual informational value.
This restraint is a mark of care. GIA is not adding commentary to every fluorescent stone; it is adding it where research supports a meaningful statement.

The wording caveat is worth watching

GIA explicitly cautions that it has not finalized the wording and is primarily evaluating the two options described.
That caveat should not be dismissed as legal hedging. In a document as consequential as a grading report, wording is the substance.
Consider how much turns on small choices. "May enhance" and "enhances" carry different force. "Can make existing characteristics more noticeable" and "may appear hazy" would land on the market entirely differently, despite pointing at the same phenomenon. Whether the cautionary comment emphasizes the pre-existing and unrelated nature of the characteristics — as the current draft carefully does — determines whether readers blame fluorescence or understand it as a magnifier.
The trade should pay close attention when final language is published. The difference between well-chosen and poorly-chosen phrasing here could be worth a great deal across the fluorescent stone market.

THE CONNECTING LOGIC

Step back and both announcements resolve into the same project.
Both close a gap between report content and lived experience.
A fancy-shape diamond's beauty was invisible on its report. Now it will be graded. A fluorescent diamond's actual appearance in daylight was unstated on its report, leaving a vacuum that trade folklore filled with a discount. Now it will be described.
Both are grounded in extensive research rather than convention.
Twenty years of work on fancy-shape cut standards. Extensive GIA research into blue fluorescence, published and peer-visible. Neither change is a marketing gesture; both are the deliverables of long research programs.
Both serve consumer protection in the literal sense.
GIA invokes its consumer protection mission for the cut grades explicitly. The fluorescence comments serve it equally: a consumer buying a fluorescent stone deserves to know that the characteristic is, per the research, more likely to help than hurt — and a consumer buying one of the rare problematic stones deserves to know that too.
Both will move prices.
Formalizing fancy-shape cut quality will stratify fancy-shape pricing. Documenting fluorescence's neutral-to-positive effect should pressure a discount that has persisted on weaker evidence than the trade has generally assumed. In both cases, better information should produce prices that track quality more accurately.

Those who wait will be discovering it in real time while competitors are already repositioning.
Cutters: begin treating cut grade as a planning variable now. Stones being planned today may well be graded in 2027 or later. Waiting for published criteria means producing goods for a market whose rules are already changing.
Buyers: look hard at fluorescent stones. The research says neutral-to-positive. The market still says discount. That gap is currently purchasable.
Everyone: watch the final fluorescence wording. The phrasing GIA settles on will shape how the market reads these comments for years. It is worth reading carefully rather than assuming the draft language survives unchanged.

The bottom line

The through-line is the same in both cases. For a long time, GIA reports have been silent on two things that materially affect how a diamond looks: whether a fancy shape is well cut, and whether fluorescence helps or hurts. In both cases, the silence left room for something other than evidence to set prices — instinct, folklore, and the negotiating advantage of whoever knew more.
Filling that silence with research-backed information is what a grading laboratory is for. It took twenty-one years for one of these changes and decades of contested argument for the other. Both are arriving, and the market they arrive into will not price fancy shapes or fluorescent stones quite the same way afterward.
